Automatic Door Expert Witness

Warren F. Davis, Ph.D., has served as an expert witness in some 440 legal cases involving automatic pedestrian doors since 1993.   He holds two U.S. patents (5,481,266 and 6,281,803) related to such doors, and has served in cases involving all types of doors – sliding, folding, swinging and revolving – and virtually every major manufacturer operating within the United States.

Dr. Davis was the first to identify and explain:
  • The "triple design flaw" exhibited by certain automatic sliding door sensor systems,

  • The effects of poor IR (infrared) reflectivity on the detection reliability of door-mounted active IR presence sensors used on swinging doors, and

  • Significant errors relating to door kinetic energy appearing in the ANSI A156.27-2003 national revolving door standard.
He was also the first to call for:
  • Closed-loop (self diagnostic) sensor design, and

  • Microprocessor-enforced performance of Daily Safety Checks to enhance door safety.
